JANUARY 2019 UPDATE

KIER HARDY

We start off 2019 with a selection of snaps taken from the lineside by Paul James,
featuring a selection of motive power in the North London suburbs.
This Park Royal class 103 DMU waits at the signals for a road ahead. Utilising Hornby
class 110 DMU bodies, this modified 2-car unit was built by Paul for the Eastwell fleet
and has been featured within these pages before - a Wibdenshaw regular back in the day.

Also from the Eastwell fleet, a heavily modified Heljan Baby Deltic with reworked nose ends,
headcode boxes and roof modifications to bring the radiator fan in line with the side grills.
D5908 heads a northbound Cambridge Buffet express.

More eastwell motive power in the form of Stratford allocated English Electric type 1 D8030
in charge of a mixed freight, and BTH D8225 waiting at the signals in the background.

Now an English Electric type 3 D6607 originally from the Shenston Road fleet, detailed and
weathered by Greg, this Lima model has been double motored and transfered to the Eastwell fleet.

Another Lima class 37, 6782 is also double motored by Paul utilising the Hornby Railroad mechanisms.

North British type 1 D8404 on a departmental working. A Heljan model from the Eastwell fleet.

Now a selection of Shenston Road motive power starting off with English Electric type 4 (later
class 50) number 402. Note the multiple working jumper boxes painted brown on this example....

..... and sister loco 423 as depicted in an early 1970s condition.

Warship D838 Rapid, showing the crudely applied patch on the nose end.

New into the fleet is another SLW BR Derby type 2 (class 24) D5007. A program has been
started to straighten and secure the bogie sandboxes, after it was found some had become
loose, whilst others were scattered by the lineside. A small drop of superglue should keep
them in place.

Previously featured D5087 heads a coal train towards East London.....

..... and another view of D5087 at Hornsey Road depot.

Latest addition to the Shenston Road fleet is this Kernow MRC produced Bulleid 1-co-co-1
diesel electric number 10203, weathered by Greg to include the missing beading from the bodyside.

Finally for this selection of 'watching the trains go by' are a couple of snaps of BTH type 1
locos from the Hornsey fleet, with D8204 hauling a selection of ballast wagons.

D8242 & D8224 dropping down towards Hornsey Tunnel in charge of a mixed freight.

English Electric Deltic 9002 The Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry hauling a rake of
Pullman coaches, featuring the original umber & cream, in addition to the later reversed
blue and grey livery.

The two Airfix BR brake vans have joined the paint queue. This model is to be one
of the later examples of the type and has roller bearing axleboxes and oleo buffers
replacing the kit parts.

The bright red example is more to the basic kit version, but has had detail items
added at the solebars, roof and doors.

The Hunslet 0-4-0 tram - to be D2950 - now has its skirts completed.

The wasp stripes as shown by photographs of D2950 were drawn onto a scale plan of
the type, and checked, before guidelines for the paint were carefully added to the
model using a template and sharp pencil.

The only available image of the back of D2950 is an unusual view with the upper
section of the cab removed. The stripe pattern shown on the lower half of the cab
was compared to that of some Hunslet 0-6-0s and both were found to have an angle
of about 100 degrees instead of the more standard right angle chevron use at the
front end. The pencil guidelines will be followed as the black stripes are
applied with a fine brush.

The layout will be attending the Pontefract exhibition towards the end of January,
and the hope is D2950 may be finished in time to shunt these vans.

This and the follwing pictures were taken by Paul at the recent Tolworth show. D3316 in blue
livery with red rods is seen shunting wagons in the docks exchange sidings.

A close-up of some dockside clutter.

Being in Southern Region territory, the opportunity was taken to operate the layout
with a Southern theme - Class 07 and 73 locos on duty here.
