Morfa Bank Sidings.

For Canada Street this post-war 20T Class B oil tank is typical of secondary traffic flows in the 1960s. Bachmann have provided a nicely detailed model of this style of tank, but reference to photos and diagram books suggests that an 18’ tank length was most common. This has lead to a 4mm extension of the tank using 2mm black plastic sheet and epoxy putty.

Shell-BP No. 6340 is shown after basic painting and application of additional markings from the Fox Transfers sheet.

Another member of the three wagon string is 6401, with the fleet number relocated to the typical early 1960s position. Couplings and weathering will see these tanks ready to join the fleet.

With the weathering paint already out, an Airfix tank wagon from the early days of Canada Road was given the treatment. I was never very satisfied with the idea of just a few of these Esso Class B tanks modelled ex-works on the layout, as they tended to be used in block formations when new. Seeing a picture of one in a mixed train crossing the Menai Bridge in the early 1970s gave inspiration for reworking one of the old models.

This waste oil tank, modelled using the old Airfix kit, dates from Canada Road’s earliest days. The livery is based on ones seen during the late 70s, when they had been cascaded to secondary duties after the arrival of higher capacity tanks for the main traffic flows. Etched brass ladders have been used in place of the plastic ones supplied, but otherwise it is largely unaltered.
