Departmental Motive Power

*****************************************************************************************************************************************************************

A selection of motive power used in conjunction with the various British Rail
departments, including Permanent Way Maintenance, Signaling and Research.

Ruston & Hornsby 88DS which was to be found at Reading Signal Works. It still requires some weathering, but is shown here after being converted to EM gauge. The die-cast chassis doesn't allow the wheels to be just pulled out, as the clearances are very tight. As well as attention to the flanges, some material needed to be removed from the face of the wheels to reduce their thickness.

This Hornby 48DS was converted by the simple expedient of pulling out the existing wheels after the width has been thinned down.

D5901 as used by the Derby RTC - a Silver Fox resin body on a modified Lima class 20 chassis.

The Silver Fox model was retired from the layout and replaced with this Heljan Baby Deltic.

Ruston & Hornsby BR(W) Permanent Way Maintenance locomotive PWM654 at Shenston Road.

Captured at Expo EM Autumn, Wakefield 2019 is a SLW Class 24 - 97 201 'Experiment'.

During the early 1970s Metropolitan Vickers Co-Bo D5705 spent time a short time in Derby RTC service.

From the Shenston Road fleet is Clayton 8598 seen here at Hornsey Road depot. This is a Techcad model with additional detail and conduit fitted to represent another RTC loco.

Matisa Neptune track recording trolley (3D printed). Making the outrigger wires was quite involved, so a jig mas made for consistency. Buffers, glazing, and Neptune lettering still to do on this non-powered model. The information came via Thingiverse from Sweden, where the vehicles were also used.
