Ballast & Hopper Wagons

*****************************************************************************************************************************************************************

The Trout ballast hopper which was developed by Leeds Forge in the 1920s from designs dating from the 1910s, for the South Eastern and Chatham Railway, and for export. The design was given LNER Dia 54 and LMS Dia 1800, was unfitted and had a capacity of 25 tons. Later lots of wagons were built by Met Cam and BRCW. After nationalisation British Railways built more.

The ex-LMS 3D printed Trout (DM282270) is shown here next to a Hornby BR Trout, the differences being minimal and feature slightly different detail at the top of the wagon sides. The Hornby 2-part construction is evident with a break in the side struts.

BR built Herring ballast hopper. They were developments of the earlier Trout hopper but have a slightly longer wheelbase and body with less capacity, and were vacuum fitted.

BR built 20t Herring DB992418.

A BR built Mackerel 17t ballast hopper which was also a development of the earlier Trout with a slightly longer wheelbase & body, vacuum fitted and lower body than the Herring.

BR built 17t Mackerel DB992342.

BR built 20t Herring DB992387 & 17t Mackerel DB992325.

Ex-LMS Gannet ballast hopper. Built in 1931 they had side operated central opening doors. Some were branded as Trout and lasted well into the 1970s.

Here's the BR version of the Gannet dia 1/581. The hopper is of welded construction with slightly altered end slopes and end supports.

BR Dogfish. This is a repainted and weathered Heljan model.

Another Dogfish showing the weathering insidee the hopper body.

Mermaid - side tipping ballast wagons constructed from Cambrian kits.

A Bachmann Sealion weathered using both brush and spray gun, referencing photographs of the prototype.

Shark ballast plough - a weathered Hornby model.

Slag Ballast Hopper. This conversion of the 24 Ton hopper involved the addition of raves, crew riding platforms and hopper operating handwheels on both sides as opposed to the single sided lever on the original design. These conversions seemed to be made from the ex Private Owner stock. BR 24 Ton Iron Ore Hopper dia 1/162. 1500 of these wagons were built in 1950, along with 1000 very similar vehicles rated at 22 Tons.
