Replacing the original Heljan model, this D1000 Western Enterprise is a Dapol model.

Heljan D1056 'Western Sultan' (c 1969) at Aberath. Work carried out included
removing horn cowls with a razor saw, once done the cab roof and the offending peak
could be filed to a more pleasing curvature, before the horn cowls were refitted. The
fan grilles were replaced with etched replacements from Shawplan, but the original
Heljan walkways were retained, the front valances were modified using the whitemetal
replacements from Shawplan, whilst the buffers are from Craftsman Models. The brake
gear used the brake shoes from the Heljan kit, but using brass for the brake linkages.
Wheels are from Black Beetle with the four holes drilled out in each wheel, although
the Ultrascale conversion would be a much easier route, but these were to hand at the
time and have done the job just as well. Name and numberplates are from Shawplan.

D1068 Western Reliance is routed into the Up Goods Loop near BSC Shenston Works, with
a rake of 21 ton mineral wagons. The locomotive was easily identified by a crudely
applied patch on this end of the cab (Dapol model).

Western Locomotive Wheels -   by Greg Brookes

When using proprietry Jackson wheels (14mm coach disc) to convert the Western loco to EM gauge,
it lacks the characteristics of the prototype, without having the four holes visible. The following
images show a simple jig, which has been made from an old brass loco wheel, and fits nicely
inside the rim of the wheel to be modified. Four equi-distant holes are drilled into it, and
a steel pin fitted to one hole, which protrudes out slightly.
 
The photograph below shows the wheel before modification.
 
Now with the jig fitted into the wheel, a hole is drilled through the wheel, using any one of the
holes in the jig. The jig is then turned around, so that the pin engages into the drilled hole.
 
The drilling process is repeated, until all 4 holes are done, the jig removed, and the
pinpoint is cut and filed off flush.
 
Once cleaned, fettled and painted, the finished items can be seen below, and fitted to the loco.
