MAY 2019 UPDATE

PETE JOHNSON

The Class 04 project continues to make slow but steady progress, with the black element of the wasp stripes now added at both ends.

Canada Street - complete with roving BR crewbus - will be appearing at the Mickelover MRG exhibition held in the atmospheric former North Midland Railway roundhouse in Derby on May 11th and 12th. (The background of this picture suggests rail traffic into the docks has ceased, but the clock will be turned back to busier times for the show!)

By way of tribute to the Derby locomotive works, two new models will be running at the exhibition – the first is the LMS/BR Class 11, number ‘12051’, built at Derby during 1948/49, and modelled as it appeared at the dawn of the 1970s just prior to withdrawal. Alan Gibson No. 4849 tender wheels of suitable diameter have been drilled out to accept 1/8” axles, and the brake rigging positions adjusted to suit. My thanks must go to Karl, Kier and Paul for their help with various aspects of this project.

Five years later Derby was getting into its stride with the build of what was to become the BR Class 08. The 41st example of the type left the works early in 1954 carrying steam-era running number ‘13040’. Later becoming ‘D3040’, and then just ‘3040’ in a post-1968 works visit that would see it through to TOPS re-numbering as 08 028. This is the condition in which it is modelled to complete the sequence of Class 08 liveries which suit the 1960 to 1979 operating span of Canada Street.

Hebble Vale Goods appeared at the recent York exhibition, with Mostyn's regular performer, a BR Sulzer type 2, 24082 regauged for the weekend to run on these West Yorkshire metals.

The 2 minute conversion was carried out by Phil Sutton by inserting a set of SLW EM gauge wheelsets, but next time you see it, it will be back to P4.

Hebble Vale Goods will be appearing at the Spring Expo EM event at Bracknell on the 18th & 19th of May.

With the layout at an advanced stage of construction, now is the time to add extra detail and populate certain areas. The police figures are whitemetal and were painted a couple of years ago. They are shown here (for a limited time only) to accompany a pair of Police vehicles at an incident.... no flashing lights included BTW. The lower image shows the driver of an ERF articulated lorry passing a group of women chatting in the street. The pram is an etched brass kit by Scale Link.

Hornsey Broadway will be appearing at the DEMU Showcase on the 1st & 2nd of June, in Swadlincote, South Derbyshire. For further details of the exhibition click here for DEMU Showcase 2019

Another Scale Link pram (this time with lowered hood), alongside a parent to keep the children under control around the ice cream van.

A selection of railwaymen from Modelu are in the process of being painted. They are 3D scans of Tim Rogers & Paul James in BR driver / secondman uniforms.

Kaff appears to be doing a roaring trade alongside Hornsey New Road - these 3 observational snaps taken on Greg's pocket camera.

A snapshot of Long Row, across the lines.

Demolition rubble and wood for burning.

A recent visitor to the layout was this WD 2-8-0 number 90445 from Shenston Road, converted to EM by spreading the existing Bachmann wheels. The image has been enhanced with the addition of smoke effects, to give the impression of it climbing the 1:80 gradient.

Without effects.

PAUL JAMES

A few images showing the 2 Class 31s in the works at the moment, receiving alterations and modifications to the Lima bodyshells.

They will both be Finsbury Park allocated Brush type 2s fitted with tripcocks for working the Widenend Lines. They were due into the paint shops in the first week of May, so should hopefully be ready for DEMU Showcase at the begining of June.
