JUNE 2019 UPDATE

PETE JOHNSON

Surely one of the most atmospheric venues for an exhibition? ‘Canada Street’ is pictured by the turntable inside the old Derby roundhouse before the Mickelover MRG show opened on the Saturday.

The morning light on the Downing building lit the details hiding in the shadows behind the iron columns.

Class 04 tram ‘D2212’ squeals round the 2-chain curve as it heads towards the docks with some BRT grain hoppers.

Recently finished Class 08 model ‘3040’ basks in the sunshine by the engineman’s cabin.

Continuing the immediately pre-TOPS theme, Class 03 ‘2135’ is pictured arriving in the exchange sidings with a string of empty 16 tonners.

'2135’ is seen again as it rolls along the dockside with some loaded 21 tonners forming the return working.

In a view from the operators side, Class 11 ‘12051’ sorts some grain hoppers in the shadow of the dock wall.

A few snaps taken by Paul at the Derby exhibition.

Back of the bench, the new Class 04 mech is nearing completion, finished with 3’3” wheels and early type sandboxes to suit the chosen prototype. This makes use of a 1219 Portescap gearmotor unit, the last I have available - and so likely marks an end to my chassis building projects….

KIER HARDY

The latest visitors from Greg's Shenston Road layout are these Kernow MRC North British D600ers. D600 Active and D602 Bulldog keep 7098 company in the stabling sidings.

Before sending them out on the main line for a good running in session, a few other diesel hydraulics got in on the action for a Western themed snapshot.

Out on the main line earning their keep.

Paul's recently acquired rake of Cemflos have all been converted to EM gauge, and arrived in the Hornsey Workshops for some weathering treatment. I've used a variety of stages to give them the early '70s look, including talcum powder on a varnished area to give slight depth to the overspill around the filling hatches.

Pigments of grey and beige were brushed around and fixed with a quick spray of white spirit and cement coloured washes. These images show them before the underframes have been weathered.

Hornsey Broadway appeared at DEMU Showcase in Swadlincote during the weekend of the 1st & 2nd of June, and was a great chance for us to catch up with so many of you. A big thank you to the team of operators for their help, to the organisers and members of DEMU, and to the visitors to the show. Below is a selection of links to various youtube clips (warts and all). Paul as usual was out and about with his camera to capture the weekend, images of which can be seen here -

Thank you also to all of those that took the time to record, and post clips on the internet - it's much appreciated.

With the Cemflos out of the workshops, space has been made for a Class 74 project. After much deliberation, the plan is to use the centre section of a Silver Fox resin body, and splice on the Hornby cabs to sit on a modified Class 71 chassis. Watch this space. This method of conversion has already been carried out by 'rembrow from RMweb' with success.
